FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
1. Can I cook in Pitalya brass and copper cookware every day?
Absolutely. Our brass and copper cookware is designed for everyday cooking. Each cooking vessel is lined with a food-safe tin coating (Kalai), making it suitable for preparing a wide variety of dishes, including those containing tomatoes, tamarind, curd, vinegar, and other mildly acidic ingredients.
2. What is Kalai (tin lining), and why is it important?
Kalai is a traditional layer of pure food-safe tin applied inside brass and copper cookware. It prevents the food from reacting with the metal while allowing you to enjoy the benefits of traditional cookware. This lining has been used in Indian kitchens for generations.
3. How long does the Kalai (tin coating) last?
With regular household use and proper care, the tin lining typically lasts 8–12 months, depending on cooking frequency and maintenance. Over time, the coating naturally wears off and can be restored through professional re-tinning (Kalai).
4. Can I use brass and copper cookware on a gas stove?
Yes. Our brass and copper cookware is suitable for use on gas stoves. We recommend using a medium flame for the best cooking performance and to help preserve the tin lining.
5. Is it safe to store food in brass or copper utensils?
For cookware with Kalai lining, it is best to transfer food after cooking rather than storing it for long periods. Copper water bottles and storage containers intended for storage can be used as recommended for their specific purpose.
6. How do I clean brass, copper, and kansa utensils?
Wash your utensils with mild dish soap, warm water, and a soft sponge. Avoid steel wool, harsh scrubbers, or abrasive cleaners. To restore the natural shine, you can occasionally use lemon and salt or a gentle metal cleaner suitable for brass and copper.
7. Why has my brass or copper utensil changed colour?
This is completely natural. Brass and copper develop a patina over time due to exposure to air and moisture. This is a sign of authentic metal and does not affect the quality or performance of the utensil.
8. Are Pitalya products handcrafted?
Yes. Every Pitalya piece is handcrafted by skilled artisans from India's renowned brass-making traditions. Since each product is handmade, slight variations in finish, texture, or dimensions make every piece unique.
9. Are your products food-safe?
Yes. All Pitalya cookware and serve ware are made using high-quality, food-safe materials. Our brass and copper cooking utensils feature a food-safe tin (Kalai) lining for safe everyday cooking.
10. Do you offer re-tinning (Kalai) services?
At present, we do not offer an in-house re-tinning service. However, the tin lining can be restored by experienced local Kalai artisans whenever required.
11. Will the utensils look exactly like the pictures?
Since every product is handcrafted, slight variations in colour, texture, hammering patterns, and finish are natural. These are not defects—they are a hallmark of authentic handmade craftsmanship.
12. Do brass and copper utensils require special maintenance?
Not at all. With simple cleaning, proper drying, and occasional polishing, your utensils will remain beautiful for years. Like all traditional cookware, a little care goes a long way.
13. Why choose Pitalya?
At Pitalya, we believe heritage belongs in everyday living. Every piece is thoughtfully handcrafted, inspired by India's timeless traditions, and created to bring beauty, authenticity, and meaningful craftsmanship into modern homes.
